The Historical Society of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
The Historical Society of The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit The Historical Society of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1989 to preserve the rich history of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and to increase public awareness of this history. The Society is also known as the Third Circuit Historical Society (TCHS). It effectuates policies for preserving all documents, records, objects, and memorabilia which may be of interest to scholars, historians and the general public. Activities of the TCHS include the presentation of educational programs, the installation and presentation of educational exhibits, and the recording of oral histories.
The TCHS's most recent accomplishment is opening two exhibitions and presenting a program on Judge Albert Maris’ life and work. Judge Maris enjoyed a remarkable 53-year career on the federal bench in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (1936-1938) and on the Third Circuit (1938-1989). The affairs of the TCHS are governed by a board of directors and officers elected by the board. The board of directors includes judges, lawyers, and academics throughout the circuit. Officers serve for two-year terms. Regular board members serve for staggered three-year terms. Ex-officio board members serve during the terms of their offices.
Membership in the TCHS is open to individuals interested in advancing the purposes of the Society, the borders of which encompass Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Membership in the Society, however, is not limited to these jurisdictions. The membership year runs from January 1 through December 31. The Third Circuit Historical Society is not formally associated with the 3CBA, but the two organizations work cooperatively whenever possible.
